Matthias Schleiden was one of the Cell Theory trio, along with Theodor Schwann and Rudolf Virchow, whose individual work together produced the modern Cell Theory.

He picked up on Robert Brown's discovery of the cell nucleus, and made the connection to cell division, and embryonic plant development from a single cell. He was possibly the first German biologist to openly support Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution.
