Matthias Schleiden was one of the Cell Theory trio, along with Theodor Schwann and Rudolf Virchow, whose individual work together produced the modern Cell Theory.
Botany, cell theory
Contributions to Phytogenesis, 1838. In this book he proposes that plants are composed of cells.
One of the trio who devised the cell theory: the others being Theodor Schwann and Rudolf Virchow.
Schleiden developed Robert Brown's discovery of the cell nucleus, and explored cell division, leading to the theory that an embryonic plant organism is derived from a cell.
Schleiden was a champion of Darwin's theory of evolution.
Schleiden was a leading champion of controversial ideas in biology in the mid 19th century. He picked up on Robert Brown's discovery of the cell nucleus, and made the connection to cell division, and embryonic plant development from a single cell. He was possibly the first German biologist to openly support Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution.
